I was extremely humbled when I found out that my short film 'Sharkbeat' had been awarded the Gold Medal at 'Under the Blue 2007' International Underwater Photography and Video Competition. The submission guidelines were to create maximum impact in a film of no longer than 60 seconds. What can you do in 60 seconds? Normally a film hasn't even got to the start credits by that point! So it was a real challenge and hopefully I did the competition justice with my film.
Sharks are a passion, sometimes even an obsession of mine, but they are literally on the very brink of extinction. Worldwide populations of some species have declined by up to 90% over the last generation, due to bycatch and industrial fishing for their fins, which are used for the grotesque 'Shark Fin Soup'. Sharks play a vital role in our Oceans' ecosystem and action needs to be taken now to avoid catastrophy.
